What is Wedding Photography?

For most couples, this may sound an odd question to ask, most would answer that wedding photography is the kind of photography done during weddings. That is partly correct. But that over simplifies the meaning of wedding photography. The art of wedding photography has change tremendously in the past twenty years. Today it may even have a different meaning for each couple.

In the past, wedding photographers are technicians behind a black box almost mystical that very few would even try to operate it. Back then, wedding couples are hiring wedding photographers to produce wedding pictures of their big day. It is to simply record the event. And the one they chose might be doing six weddings a day.

Wedding Photography Styles

So you are getting married, Congratulations! You may have already spoken with a photographer for the big day, or even been confused by some of the terminology. What is ‘Reportage’ or ‘Contemporary’ photography? And more importantly how will it affect my day and the pictures I want to have as memories from it?

This is a small article just to outline some of the benefits and pitfalls of the different styles to help you decide which is for you. I have been a Wedding Photographer in Newcastle (North East of England, UK) for 7 years and photographed hundreds of Weddings in that time. Hopefully this will help answer some of your questions.

But first the main question, which style is best? The answer unfortunately is all of them and you should find someone who can supply the photography in all of the styles.

So you’ve just got engaged! It’s now time for the excitement to begin. You’ve got a wedding to plan! At this point you’ve probably got a lot of questions running through your mind. Where do you begin? What questions should I ask vendors? Where am I going to get the money? Wait, how much money are we talking about? On the contrary to what most couples believe, wedding planning can actually be fun. With proper planning and allocated time to complete it you can create your truly unique and exciting Chicago Wedding reception.

When it comes to the entertainment portion of your reception this should be treated with care as with all your other very important wedding details. The entertainment seems to be one of, if not the most important components to a reception. Sure, the food, decorations, and socialization are very important but without entertainment, these events would take on an entirely different personality.

Taking great portraits can be the key to becoming a successful wedding photographer. While this is only part of your responsibility on the wedding day, portraits are the photos that clients will hang on their wall and pass down to family members over the years.

Your first goal should be getting to know your client and what their favorite spots are. Meeting with a client in advance of the wedding day to discuss your photo ideas is very important. Develop a good rapport and be comfortable working with each other. Meet for coffee and get in sync on what’s expected for the portrait session. You can also exchange ideas and give feed back on their selections.
